Building Language Capabilities for a Billion Speakers
India's linguistic diversity is remarkable, with over a billion people speaking more than a dozen officially recognized languages. However, AI models have traditionally excelled in English, falling short in other languages. To address this, Anthropic embarked on a company-wide initiative six months ago, focusing on curating high-quality, representative training data in 10 of India's most widely spoken languages: Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Telugu, Tamil, Punjabi, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, and Urdu. This strategic move has led to notable improvements in model performance and continues to enhance their fluency.
Partnerships for Impact
Anthropic is collaborating with Karya and the Collective Intelligence Project to evaluate the performance of AI models in locally relevant tasks across domains like agriculture and law. This evaluation process, conducted in partnership with leading Indian nonprofits, including Digital Green and Adalat AI, will inform future model enhancements for Indic languages and specific use cases in India and beyond.
Supporting Enterprises, Startups, and Digital Natives
Anthropic's India team is providing applied AI expertise to a diverse range of organizations, from large enterprises to startups and digital-native companies. Air India, for instance, is leveraging Claude Code to expedite custom software development and reduce costs. CRED has achieved remarkable results with Claude Code, delivering features 2x faster and achieving 10% better test coverage. Cognizant is deploying Claude globally to modernize legacy systems, accelerate software development, and support AI adoption among its enterprise clients.
Startups like Razorpay, Enterpret, and Emergent are also integrating AI into their operations, decision-making, and product development. At Razorpay, AI is seamlessly integrated into risk systems and operations. Enterpret's AI assistant, powered by Claude, enables daily code development, and Emergent, an AI-powered platform, has achieved significant success with $25 million in annual recurring revenue and two million users in under five months.
Empowering Students in Low-Income Communities
Anthropic is committed to making a positive impact in education, particularly in low-income communities. Pratham, one of India's largest education nonprofits, has chosen Anthropic as its strategic AI lab partner, focusing on safety and educational rigor. The Anytime Testing Machine, powered by Claude, is currently being piloted with 1,500 students across 20 schools, with plans to expand to 100 schools by 2026. This initiative aims to provide flexible and credible learning pathways by assisting students in exam preparation.
Anthropic is also collaborating with the Central Square Foundation to enhance EdTech and AI's effectiveness in educating children from underserved communities. The company will provide technical expertise, mentorship, and API credits to organizations developing AI-enabled tools, including personalized tutors and teacher coaching solutions, with the goal of reaching more primary school students across India.
AI in the Public Sector
Anthropic is partnering with the EkStep Foundation to explore the potential of AI in building interoperable digital public infrastructure, which has a proven track record of improving people's lives in India. Agriculture, a vital sector contributing nearly a sixth of the Indian economy and employing half of the labor force, is a prime example. Through the OpenAgriNet effort, Anthropic is working towards deploying Claude to expand access to expert knowledge in this critical domain.
Anthropic is also demonstrating the impact of Claude Code and Cowork within nonprofits like Noora Health and Intelehealth, which provide accessible health coaching and connect patients in remote communities to quality medical care.
Enhancing Access to Judicial Services
Anthropic is supporting Adalat AI in improving access to judicial services with a national WhatsApp helpline, launching today. Using Claude, it provides instant case updates, translation, document summarization, and interactive querying of legal documents in native Indian languages, making legal services more accessible and efficient.
Open-Source Standards for Adoption
Anthropic has developed the Model Context Protocol (MCP) as a universal open-source standard for connecting AI applications to external systems. The company recently donated it to the Linux Foundation, and the Indian Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) has launched the first official MCP server, enabling users to access and query national statistics in an open and interoperable manner. In the private sector, Swiggy uses the MCP to allow people to order groceries and make dining reservations through Claude.
Expanding Presence in India
