A history of European currency
The euro (EUR) might feel like it's been around forever, but it was only introduced in 2002. Since then, it’s become one of the most widely used currencies in the world — and a key player in global exchange markets alongside the US dollar.
Before the euro
Before the euro, countries had their own currencies — like the French franc, Italian lira, and Spanish peseta. The introduction of the euro simplified travel and trade across Europe, eliminating the need to constantly convert money between nations.
Ever wondered about the euro symbol (€)? It's inspired by the Greek letter epsilon (Є), a nod to Europe's historical roots in ancient Greece. The two parallel lines represent stability — a key value behind the shared currency.
A look back at AUD to EUR exchange rates
When the euro launched in 1999, the initial AUD to EUR exchange rate was roughly 1 AUD = 0.52 EUR — not far from today’s rate.
Since then, rates have shifted significantly. In 2008, the European sovereign-debt crisis caused the euro to weaken. As a result, the Australian dollar to euro rate improved dramatically, reaching around 0.85 EUR to 1 AUD by 2012.
The recent euro
Over the last few years, the AUD to euro exchange rate has remained relatively stable, typically hovering between 0.60 and 0.75 EUR to 1 AUD. While global economic factors, inflation, and interest rates continue to cause fluctuations, the euro remains a strong and reliable currency.
If you're planning a trip to Europe, checking the latest AUD to EUR rates — and tracking them with an AUD to EUR chart — can help you get more value for your money.
