As the festive season reached its peak, Nairobi's roads became a battleground for weary travelers, with the Nairobi-Nakuru highway emerging as the epicentre of chaos. One of the key factors exacerbating the situation was the issue of lane discipline. Vehicles overlapping lanes in an attempt to outsmart the traffic jam only served to worsen the congestion, paralysing the flow of traffic. This behaviour, while perhaps understandable in the heat of the moment, ultimately contributed to the gridlock.
Sinkholes and Road Construction: Unforeseen Obstacles
Adding to the woes, a sinkhole near Ever Ready roundabout in Nakuru led to the closure of the Nakuru-bound carriageway, while road construction activities on the Salgaa-Mau Summit route and in Mai Mahiu constricted significant segments of the road. These unforeseen obstacles further compounded the traffic woes, leaving drivers with limited options and no easy solutions.
KeNHA's Response: Guidance and Enforcement
The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) stepped in, ordering drivers to follow designated lanes, avoid merging, and adhere to traffic regulations. They also instructed vehicle operators to use alternative routes, providing directions for passengers headed to Nakuru, the Western regions, and Nyanza. Additionally, KeNHA increased enforcement, deploying traffic police officers, NTSA officers, and mobile courts to address issues like overlap driving and driving under the influence.
