Dirk Nowitzki, widely celebrated as the greatest player in the history of the Dallas Mavericks, has finally spoken out about the franchise's controversial decision to part ways with general manager Nico Harrison. His remarks were candid, heartfelt, and revealed his perspective on a franchise that has faced a turbulent year.
Appearing as an analyst on Amazon Prime's NBA broadcast, Nowitzki expressed that the Mavericks waited far too long to make the difficult choice.
"There’s just been way too many distractions and too much chaos for this situation to continue as it was," Nowitzki said. "Honestly, this change probably should have happened during the summer. I was hoping to avoid having this negative energy looming over the Cooper Flagg era, but here we are."
Harrison was let go after the team stumbled to a 3–8 start, a poor performance that pushed fan frustration to a boiling point during home games.
Harrison’s Legacy Marred by the Luka Dončić Trade

Before his tenure with Dallas, Harrison worked for Nike and held executive roles within the NBA. However, his time with the Mavericks will be most remembered for orchestrating one of the franchise's most controversial moves: trading star player Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers last February, mere months after Dončić had led the Mavericks to the 2024 NBA Finals.
Nowitzki acknowledged the anger and disbelief that many fans have felt since that trade, emphasizing the deep connection between the community and the team.
"This fanbase is incredibly loyal and passionate," he said. "I knew they weren’t going to just accept this quietly. The trade made no sense to them, and honestly, there wasn’t a clear explanation for it."
He added that the Mavericks had invested years building a team specifically around Dončić:
"You reach the Finals one year, you give up key assets to construct a roster around Luka… everything was designed for him."
The Trade That Strained Nowitzki’s Relationship with the Mavericks
Dončić, considered Nowitzki’s natural successor and the franchise’s next generational talent, was traded to the Lakers at just 25 years old. The move shocked the basketball world and led Nowitzki to create some distance from the Mavericks. Instead of attending team events, he chose to travel to Los Angeles to witness Dončić’s debut with the Lakers firsthand.
"It was incredibly sad," Nowitzki admitted. "The way it ended left fans feeling robbed—they never got to see the full journey, watching Luka develop and potentially become a champion while in Dallas."
Nowitzki Urges the Mavericks to Rebuild and Move Forward
Even with lingering disappointment, Nowitzki encouraged both the team and its supporters to turn the page and focus on rebuilding.
"This was heartbreaking, no doubt," he said. "But now it’s time to move forward, focus on the team, and rebuild the franchise. The setback was significant, but it’s about getting things back on track."
He stressed the importance of stability and support for the current roster, particularly for No. 1 draft pick Cooper Flagg.
"This team is facing challenges," Nowitzki noted. "They need all the support they can get from the fans. Hopefully, the coming season will be better, and everyone can rally behind the team."
