Edoardo Bove: Watford's New Signing Faces Comeback With Confidence
In a bold assertion, Italian midfielder Edoardo Bove declares that he is "not scared" to make his anticipated return to football with Watford. At just 23 years old, Bove has signed a long-term contract with the club, marking a significant step in his career after facing serious health challenges that prevented him from playing in Italy following the installation of a cardiac defibrillator.
Bove's journey took a dramatic turn when he collapsed on the pitch during a match for Fiorentina in December 2024. Though he made a brief return to the field in February, he only played for a mere 16 minutes against Inter Milan before stepping back. Reflecting on this experience, Bove shared with BBC Three Counties Radio, "I am not here because in England you can play even when you have a disease. I underwent extensive testing and am thrilled to be here and to compete again. This isn't just a backup option for me; it's a challenge I am eager to embrace."
He emphasizes a rational approach to his health, stating that the timing of his medical incident was fortuitous—he was old enough to understand the gravity of the situation but not so old as to be overwhelmed by fear. "I'm a very rational person," he explained. "I consulted many doctors, and we all agree that I am in good shape and can play without any issues."
Bove's experience echoes the stories of other players like Christian Eriksen, the former Manchester United and Tottenham star, and Welsh defender Tom Lockyer, both of whom have made successful comebacks after collapsing during matches. "I’ve exchanged messages with Christian, and I feel really confident about my body. I recognize that this device is now a part of me," he remarked.
Despite having what he refers to as "the machine inside," Bove is fully committed to helping Watford secure a place back in the Premier League. His contract extends until the summer of 2031, and there are hopes that he might be ready to play within four to six weeks, depending on his recovery progress. "It’s tough to pinpoint an exact timeline," he admitted. "Ultimately, it’s up to the medical and technical staff. I’ll have to be completely honest with them about how I feel. I’ve spent a lot of time training alone, which has helped me become more aware of my body and its needs. We’re collaborating closely to ensure I get back on the pitch quickly while avoiding injuries—that’s the top priority. I tend to push myself to return swiftly, but we need to find the best approach."
Bove's background includes a stint at Roma, where he scored three goals over 65 Serie A appearances before being loaned to Fiorentina in the summer of 2024. He recently watched Watford's 1-1 draw against Portsmouth on January 21 and expressed his excitement about rejoining a team environment. "I noticed that English football is quite physical, which I was already aware of. The stadiums are incredible—some even surpass those in Italy!"
He went on to praise the competitive nature of the Championship, noting, "Every match is challenging, and you have to put in the effort, even against teams at the bottom of the table. I enjoy playing aggressively and feel capable of contributing both offensively and defensively in midfield, depending on the coach's needs. My goal is to remain here, rediscover my passion for football, and strive towards our objectives."
