Majority Leader Condemns Minority Caucus' Disregard for Parliamentary Rules
In a strong statement, Mr. Mahama Ayariga, the Majority Leader, has criticized the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Minority Caucus for their persistent violation of parliamentary procedures during plenary sessions.
At the opening of the Practice and Procedure Week 2025 in Parliament, Mr. Ayariga expressed his frustration over what he sees as a growing trend of procedural misconduct by the Minority Caucus. He specifically mentioned their frequent use of the Friday business statement platform to raise a wide range of topics, from seemingly trivial matters to more complex issues, without adhering to the established rules and protocols.
"I am deeply concerned about the abuse of parliamentary procedures by the Minority Caucus," Mr. Ayariga stated, urging the Speaker and the Clerk to take a firmer stance to ensure procedural integrity. He emphasized that Ghana's Constitution and the Standing Orders of Parliament provide a clear framework for the introduction and debate of matters, and all Members of Parliament should adhere to these rules to maintain the sanctity and efficiency of parliamentary proceedings.
The event, themed 'Strengthening Ghana's Parliamentary Democracy: The Role of Practice and Procedure,' aims to highlight the importance of rules and processes in legislative governance. It seeks to reinforce best practices in legislative conduct and enhance understanding of parliamentary rules among lawmakers and staff.
Mr. Ayariga's remarks set a critical tone, underscoring the need for discipline and respect for institutional processes within Ghana's legislative arm. He called on the Legislative Management Services of the Parliamentary Service to increase public awareness of parliamentary practice and procedures, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of these processes.
