Unveiling the Rising Trend: India's Growing Tourism Impact in the US
The tourism landscape between India and the United States is experiencing a remarkable transformation. With a 40% surge in visitation since 2019, India has emerged as the second-largest overseas market for US tourism, as confirmed by Fred Dixon, President and CEO of Brand USA. This surge in travel volume highlights the increasing sophistication and spending power of Indian travelers, who are now exploring destinations beyond traditional US gateways.
The 12th edition of Brand USA Travel Week in Bengaluru further underscores the growing importance of the Indian market. The event attracted a large US delegation, comprising approximately 75 representatives from US destinations and travel businesses, engaging with Indian travel trade partners and media. This delegation's presence signifies the expanding significance of the India-US travel corridor.
The year 2025 marked a significant milestone, with over two million Indian visitors traveling to the US, making India the second-largest market for US tourism from overseas. This achievement is a testament to the robust growth in the Indian travel market and its increasing appeal to US destinations.
While New York, California, and Florida remain the most popular destinations for Indian travelers, there's a noticeable shift towards exploring the country's diverse offerings. Indian tourists are now venturing deeper into the US, with India ranking among the top 10 source markets for most US destinations, if not the top five. This trend indicates a growing appetite for diverse experiences within the US.
Looking ahead, 2026 promises to be a landmark year for US tourism. The convergence of major global events, including the FIFA World Cup, the 250th anniversary of the United States, and the Route 66 anniversary, will generate unprecedented excitement. The FIFA World Cup, in particular, will captivate football fans and local communities alike, with 48 teams across 11 host cities, from Seattle to Miami.
Brand USA, as the national tourism marketing organization, is strategically promoting these events globally. The organization's efforts are aimed at maximizing the economic impact of Indian travelers, who are now the second-highest spending market. Indian tourists' long-stay visits and discerning travel choices make them a valuable asset to the US tourism economy.
The India-US travel corridor's positive outlook is expected to continue, with Brand USA maintaining its optimism. The decade ahead is filled with major sporting events, including the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028, the Rugby World Cup in 2031, and the Winter Olympics in 2034, further fueling long-term demand.
