A dramatic turn of events has unfolded in the Valencia Grand Prix sprint, leaving Joan Mir facing a penalty. The MotoGP stewards have penalized Joan Mir following a collision with his teammate, Luca Marini. This incident occurred during the sprint race, adding another layer of tension to the already high-stakes competition.
Mir, the 2020 world champion, found himself in a challenging position after a less-than-ideal start from tenth on the grid. He attempted an overtake on his Honda teammate, Marini, on the second lap of the sprint. Unfortunately, Mir locked the front end of his bike, leading to a crash that also took Marini out of the race.
The stewards swiftly investigated the incident. They have decided to penalize Mir with a long lap penalty, which he will serve in the upcoming Valencia finale on Sunday. This marks Mir's first offense of the season, adding to the disappointment.
Interestingly, this decision came shortly after Mir expressed his views to the media in the Valencia paddock. He mentioned he wasn't overly concerned about a penalty, stating that it would discourage overtaking. He explained that the crash was due to a loss of control, and he unintentionally collided with Marini.
But here's where it gets controversial... Mir's penalty is a setback for Honda, as they need to secure nine points on Sunday to improve their concession rank. This would mean losing valuable benefits, such as free engine development and testing. However, Mir shared that the team doesn't want these concessions.
Adding to the drama, Johann Zarco of LCR will start from eleventh on Sunday. Furthermore, Jorge Martin of Aprilia has also been penalized with a double long lap penalty for a collision with Marco Bezzecchi in the Motegi sprint.
