A groundbreaking study has revealed that public Montessori preschoolers emerge with superior reading skills compared to their peers by the end of kindergarten. This finding challenges the perception of Montessori as an exclusive private school system, as Angeline Lillard, a Commonwealth professor of psychology at the University of Virginia, explains that the Montessori approach offers "significantly better outcomes for children" in public schools too.
The study, which followed students across 24 public Montessori schools nationwide, including in the D.C. region, found that these children demonstrated enhanced reading abilities, executive function, and social understanding by kindergarten's end. Lillard asserts that "the average child will thrive in a Montessori environment more than in a traditional one."
