Imagine this: a Formula 1 team boldly instructing their driver to challenge the seemingly unstoppable Max Verstappen. Sounds like a recipe for disaster, right? But that's exactly what McLaren did during the Las Vegas Grand Prix, and Red Bull's Helmut Marko couldn't help but find it amusing.
Here's the scene: Lando Norris, starting from pole position, was urged by his McLaren team to go after Verstappen, the four-time world champion. But here's where it gets controversial... Was this a strategic move or a bold miscalculation? Norris, in his attempt to defend the inside line aggressively, ended up going wide at Turn 1, allowing Verstappen to overtake him effortlessly. George Russell, too, seized the opportunity, overtaking Norris at the start and briefly pressuring Verstappen before pitting on lap 17.
And this is the part most people miss... While Norris pitted on lap 22 and Verstappen on lap 25, the real drama unfolded in the subsequent stints. Norris, regaining pace, overtook Russell with 16 laps to go and was then told, “We’re going to get Max,” who was leading by a few seconds. Verstappen, informed of McLaren’s radio message, responded with sheer dominance, setting the fastest lap and extending his lead to a staggering 20.7 seconds.
Marko, amused yet impressed, praised Verstappen’s control, stating, “He was able to easily maintain the pace of those behind him and therefore save the tyres.” But is Verstappen’s dominance a testament to his skill or a reflection of McLaren’s overambition? Marko couldn’t resist highlighting the irony: “The funniest thing was the message from McLaren: ‘Attack Max, overtake him.’ And then he hammered in one fastest lap after another, just to make things clear.”
Red Bull boss Laurent Mekies echoed the sentiment, calling it “a masterclass” from Verstappen. Despite McLaren’s early-season superiority, Red Bull’s resurgence post-Monza upgrades has kept Verstappen in the title fight, with Qatar and Abu Dhabi remaining. But here’s the burning question: Can anyone truly challenge Verstappen, or is the championship already his to lose?
With McLaren’s post-race disqualification in Las Vegas, the title race has been blown wide open. Verstappen, now just 24 points behind Norris, remains a formidable force. What’s your take? Is Verstappen unbeatable, or is there still hope for a thrilling season finale? Let us know in the comments!
