A New Chapter: Oscar Onley's Journey to INEOS Grenadiers
"The feeling was extraordinary," Oscar Onley recalls, referring to Geraint Thomas' historic Tour de France win in 2018. Eight years later, Onley finds himself at the heart of a new era for INEOS, a team that has left an indelible mark on his cycling journey.
For Onley, joining INEOS is a dream come true and a return to his roots. "If I could tell my 10-year-old self that one day I'd be part of this team, he'd think I was crazy!" he exclaims. But it's not just about the team's success; it's about the deep connection Onley feels with its history and values.
The Moment That Sparked a Dream
When asked about his most memorable cycling moment, Onley's answer is immediate: Geraint Thomas' Tour de France victory in 2018. "It was special, especially because G wasn't the dominant force beforehand. He made it look hard, and that resonated with me," Onley explains. This win, he says, felt different from others, offering a glimmer of hope to aspiring riders like himself.
From Spectator to Teammate
Fast forward a few years, and Onley found himself racing alongside his inspiration. "Racing with G and seeing his dedication, not just for his own results but for the team's goals, has been inspiring," he shares. Now, with Thomas in a new role as Director of Racing, their connection has only strengthened. "I'm thrilled to have him as a mentor. We've had great conversations, and I know I can reach out to him anytime for advice," Onley adds.
The Allure of INEOS
INEOS has always held a special place in Onley's heart. "As a British rider, I've always wanted to be part of this team. The support they offer is incredible, and the British core is something I'm proud of," he says. Even as the team has grown globally, that British identity remains a key part of its appeal.
A New Challenge, A New Summit
Onley is clear about his goals: "I want to aim for the biggest races, the Grand Tours. I believe in this team and the project we're building." He knows that success isn't guaranteed, but he's determined to prove himself. "I want to prepare as best I can, arrive at these races in top form, and see where that takes me."
A Legacy to Build On
Geraint Thomas' 2018 win changed the game for British riders. It showed that success was possible without being invincible. Now, Onley steps into the same team, guided by the same spirit, ready to write his own story. "I'm not just watching this time. I'm part of the journey," he concludes.
