Imagine walking into the nursery and noticing a section curtained off, with a sign that reads, "Pardon Our Plankton." It's a teaser, a hint at something extraordinary about to unfold. And unfold it did, with the arrival of the leafy sea dragons (Phycodurus eques), a species native to the coasts of Australia.
Their name is a perfect fit, as these dragons sport leaf-shaped protrusions all over their long, wyrm-like bodies. But here's the twist: these protrusions are not fins or appendages for swimming; they're nature's masterpiece, a form of camouflage. It's as if these dragons are masters of disguise, blending seamlessly into their marine environment.
The Seas pavilion, now known as The Seas with Nemo & Friends, celebrated its 40th anniversary this month, on January 15th. Originally named The Living Seas, it has evolved over the years, offering guests unique experiences like the movie "The Sea" and the Hydrolator, an "elevator ride" to the ocean floor. The Caribbean Coral Reef Ride, a beloved attraction, closed in 2001 and was reimagined into the current Nemo-themed adventure.
In a recent transformation, the aquarium has shifted from a long-term care residence to a short-term rehabilitation center, a change that aligns with Disney's commitment to conservation and animal welfare. And for those who love a good demonstration, the diver lock-out chamber, after a five-year hiatus, has made its return, offering a glimpse into the world of aquatic research and care.
