The race is on! NASA JPL hosted a thrilling Invention Challenge, attracting student engineers from across the nation. But the real surprise? Local students dominated the competition!
Eighteen teams from Los Angeles and Orange counties battled it out. Arcadia High School's Team Still Water claimed victory with an impressive 6.45 seconds. Mission Viejo High's seniors weren't far behind, securing second place with a time of 6.71 seconds. And the Samo Seals of Santa Monica High rounded out the local podium, taking third place with a respectable 9.18 seconds.
But here's where it gets interesting: five teams from other regions were invited, including professionals. Yet, it was the local talent that shone. Retired JPL engineer Alan DeVault's team, "Trial and Error Engineering," took first place again, proving experience is invaluable. Meanwhile, Team 6 from Massachusetts secured second, leaving no room for an outsider on the podium.
This competition showcases the incredible potential of young minds. It begs the question: are we doing enough to nurture the next generation of engineers? The debate is open, and your thoughts are welcome!
