Sunny Hostin Blasts Democrats for 'Caving' in Government Shutdown Deal | The View Controversy (2026)

The heated debate on 'The View' has sparked a fiery discussion about the recent government shutdown and the role of Democrats and Republicans. Sunny Hostin, a co-host of the show, didn't hold back, expressing her frustration with both parties for their handling of the longest government shutdown in US history.

The shutdown, lasting over a month, was a result of the parties' inability to agree on a bill to fund government services. Whoopi Goldberg revealed that eight Senate Democrats had seemingly given up, siding with the GOP to potentially reopen the government, a move that left Hostin and others dissatisfied.

Hostin laid the blame squarely on the Republicans, stating, "They control the House, the Senate, the White House, and the Supreme Court. This shutdown was their choice. They chose to cut SNAP benefits, ACA subsidies, and gut the federal government and employment."

She continued, "Democrats had no part in this. It's time for them to step up and become a true opposition party."

Hostin's anger was directed at the Democrats for what she saw as their capitulation. "They caved. They let down the American people. I have no faith that the Republicans will negotiate in good faith. If you do this once, shame on you. But to do it multiple times? Shame on the Democrats for thinking the Republicans will even consider their proposals."

She even called for Minority Leader Chuck Schumer to step down if he couldn't keep his caucus united. "His time is up,"

Ana Navarro joined the criticism, targeting President Donald Trump for partying at Mar-a-Lago with the Argentine President while the government was shut down. Navarro argued that Trump's failure to lead and find a solution to the shutdown and rising healthcare costs could have dire consequences. "We need to demand better leadership, starting with Trump."

Hostin agreed, adding, "We won't get better leadership from Trump. Cruelty is his goal. He doesn't care. This is a Republican decision, and they must face the consequences."

'The View' airs weekdays at 11/10c on ABC, continuing to spark these important political conversations.

What are your thoughts on the government shutdown and the roles of the Democrats and Republicans? Do you agree with Hostin's assessment? Let us know in the comments!
