The arrested drivers included George Mung'ongo (29) from Arusha, who was driving a Toyota Land Cruiser ambulance with eight passengers. Paul Zacharia (37) and Victor Baroho (30) were also transporting nine passengers each in separate Land Cruiser ambulances. Godliving Sawe (37) had 12 passengers in a Toyota Hiace ambulance, while John Masae (26) was found with five passengers in another Land Cruiser ambulance.
All the drivers, except Mung'ongo, are residents of Dar es Salaam, and it was revealed that they had been converting ambulances into long-distance passenger vehicles for personal gain. This news sparked outrage and concern among the public.
Shamim Abdalah, a resident of Morogoro, expressed her disappointment, highlighting the ethical and safety implications. She emphasized that the misuse of ambulances could lead to life-threatening situations, such as a mother in need of urgent medical attention being denied access due to the ambulance being used as a minibus.
Abdalah commended the government and police for their swift action, urging stricter legal penalties to deter such misconduct. The Regional Police Commander affirmed that the safety operation will continue throughout the festive period, with officers deployed along major highways to ensure compliance with traffic and public safety regulations.
Mkama cautioned that any misuse of emergency service vehicles will not be tolerated, and members of the public are encouraged to report any suspicious activities involving ambulances.
