Opponents consistently managed to score over 30 points per game, prompting Kinne to make a significant change to the defensive leadership. Sources confirm that Kinne has decided to part ways with Dexter McCoil Sr., with Matthew Gregg stepping in as the interim defensive coordinator for the upcoming bowl game.
McCoil Sr. initially joined Kinne's staff as a safeties coach before being promoted to defensive coordinator before the 2024 season. He also shared a coaching history with Kinne at Incarnate Word.
Gregg, on the other hand, has been with Texas State for three years, joining in December 2022. Before his collegiate coaching stint, he gained experience coaching at the high school level in both Oklahoma and Texas. Similar to other staff members, Gregg also worked with Kinne at Incarnate Word before moving to the Football Bowls Subdivision at Texas State.
Texas State's defense ranked 91st in total defense, allowing just under 400 yards per game this season. They also ranked 111th in scoring defense, giving up 30.58 points per game. Although the Bobcats had shown improvement in 2024, reducing their points allowed to below 25 per game, the recent return to allowing over 30 points per game has led to changes on the defensive side.
